The combination of Multimedia and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) poses a significant challenge to the computing and communication infrastructure. Although local multimedia applications offer sophisticated capabilities, multimedia in communications is usually limited to more or less trivial picturephone functionality. Based on the idea of window sharing, our Joint Viewing and Teleoperation Service (JVTOS) sets out to enable the cooperative use of existing multimedia applications in the workplace. JVTOS implementations on SUN, Macintosh, and MS-Windows computers demonstrate that cooperative work with cooperation unaware applications is indeed possible and useful.
